Biology

Principles, Theories & Precepts of Biology

The Principles, Theories & Precepts of Biology consists of six chapters of text and six companion student activity books. This course is designed to satisfy most state requirements for one high school biology transcript credit. Students who complete this course will have a strong foundation for college studies in science and theories about the origin of life. The publisher takes a bold approach by challenging popular theories through use of the scientific method, application of DNA, and recent research to point out strengths and weaknesses of theories. Like all PAC courses, the PTP of Biology can be completed in a classroom under guidance of a teacher, or through guided independent studies with minimum dependence on the teacher. The product design of the texts and companion activity books enables students to engage the material with or without oversight by a biology teacher. Lab experiences are not required, but may easily be accomplished as directed by the teacher.

More: Two additional chapters are available under the title, Precepts of Anatomy and Physiology, to enable students to expand their studies and/or to select four of six particular chapters to satisfy academic components stipulated by state standards for one transcript credit in biology. The combination of six biology chapters and two anatomy chapters earns two high school science credits.

Biology Reviews:

Many homeschooling parents face the high school years with a bit of trepidation, especially regarding the subject of science. But with resources available such as Principles, Theories, & Precepts of Biology by Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum, homeschooling high school need not be so scary!

This highly engaging curriculum is presented in workbook format with black and white illustration and includes companion activity books to guide the student through their studies with multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions. Designed for use in an independent environment, these translate nicely to the homeschool setting. The writing is excellent, which more than makes up for the lack of color.

Thorough coverage of typical high school biology topics is provided. Along with that, each chapter’s expectations, concepts, and vocabulary are presented clearly and given ample review.

We enjoyed the inspiring quotes by scientists and other famous people that were sprinkled throughout the texts called “Life Principles.” For instance, after the study of Gregor Mendel’s struggle for recognition from the scientific community came the quote, “Loneliness and truth often travel hand in hand.”  (Barry Forbes”)

The theory of evolution is truly presented as a theory and not fact as in so many science texts, and current research is used to show the inherent flaws. Young-earth creationism is presented and Christian families will appreciate the fact that their beliefs are respectfully discussed and not dismissed.

Quizzes and chapter tests are used to assess progress, with constant encouragement directed to the student. Also, students will be glad to know that if a grade higher that 85% is consistently made on the quizzes, the chapter tests may be skipped!

The complete Principles, Theories, & Precepts of Biology kit comes with six text workbooks which average sixty pages each, along with six corresponding activity books with about forty-five pages each. Included in the kit is the Teacher’s Resource Kit with answers, quizzes, and test both on paper and CD.

While the publisher states that this course meets the requirements for one high-school biology credit, there is no lab component. Personally, we supplemented with the lab course offered by Homeschool Science Press in order to count this as one of our lab science credits which most colleges require for admission.

I think that many homeschooling parents will find this course to be a good alternative to some of the more intimidating biology texts available for homeschooling students and will discover high school biology to not only be doable, but enjoyable.
