Fall and winter days demand changes in clothing and activities.  Families layer on garments sufficient to maintain body warmth while jogging, hiking, walking, skiing, and sledding in parks and meadows, and on mountain slopes.  Brisk winds and crisp temperatures invigorate the emotions and energy to peak heights.  Wise families schedule routine outdoor activities that bring moderate sunlight exposure to eyes and skin during winter seasons when days are short and nights are long. Puberty Gets Blame for Appeasement Parenting

A Christian father recently said, “I had a great relationship with my daughter until puberty came along.”  With deep sorrow the father related how his daughter became rebellious, untruthful, disobedient, and sensual as she entered adolescence.  She no longer wanted to participate in family activities or talk about spiritual interests.  A great “wall” emerged between the daughter and her parents.  Their values and lifestyle were challenged and disobeyed by the angry, belligerent, and self-focused girl, who yelled, slammed doors, and defied common sense. The film, Waiting for Superman, is raising eyebrows among politicians, increasing blood pressure among teachers’ unions, eliciting praise among charter schools, and causing consternation among pastors and parents.  The nation is in a dither over conditions in America’s government schools, especially for fatherless teenagers in ethnic, inner city communities.  Producers of the film affirm that their objective is to instigate a serious national debate over the causes and effects of underperforming public schools.  The debate has been in process since at least 1962 when topics such as prayer in school, academic vouchers, and educational choice began to appear on media pages and legislative agendas.  (more…)

Selecting the Right Curriculum for Boys

 Someone aptly remarked, “boys will be boys”.  The reference was to typical male behavior – aggressive, adventuresome, risk-taking, fidgety, hero-role playing.  Ironically, too many parents and teachers make the tragic mistake of attempting to engage boys in academics that are void of the mental interests of boys.  A great majority of typical classroom studies are geared to appeal to “girl interest” – feelings, emotions, romance, quietness, literary.
